Some poeple argue about this topic a lot. They say that wide boards are sluggish and heavy, while many people with big feet will ride wide. Well, I believe everybody is correct. Yes, wide boards are a bit slower edge to edge. That is common sense and physics. And they probably have a bit more mass due to the extra width.

However, those differences in many cases are negligible or the lesser of two evils. If somebody has a big put, they will undoubtedly reduce toe overhang with a wider board. This has a very clear advantage when edge hold is critical. When you turn, you put your board on edge. If you want to turn sharper, you push the board further on edge. But if your toes are hanging over you are limited. On an icy day for instance, your toes will litterally push your edge of the snow and you will slide (a term called boot-out). Also, even if the snow is not icy, your toes will be dragginh in the slush. This will slow down your riding like you are dragging an anchor.

Here are some guideline. If edge hold is important, especially when turning sharp or carving, get a wider board! They make them for a reason. If you want to ride park or pow all day and will not be driving a hard edge into hard pack, then you can pass on the wide board.
